Eugène GIRARDET (1853-1907) - Lot 56
Eugène GIRARDET (1853-1907) The return of the shepherds at dusk Oil on canvas signed 62 x 101 cm Framed, carquelure, old restoration Provenance: acquired in the 1920s, then through family descent Eugène Girardet was an Orientalist painter who evolved during the second half of the 19th century. He began his career in Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio, before moving on to the horizons of North Africa, where he discovered the luminosity of the Orient, with its subtle, warm colors. He traveled several times to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, where our painting is located. This picturesque scene, of which he is the precentor, stands in stark contrast to the Haussmannian Paris of the same period, transporting us to a sublimated East, far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
