PEREPEDIL carpet (Caucasus), early 20th century - Lot 218
PEREPEDIL carpet (Caucasus), early 20th century Dimensions: 196 x 128cm. Technical features: Wool velvet on wool foundation. A navy field, highlighted with chess pieces, hosts an inextricable decoration typical of Lesghi rugs. Framed by multicolored kindjals (Caucasian daggers) with kotchak guards, the center features a succession of flamboyant starry flowers, stylized birds and large kotchaks (ram's horns) in a row. A multitude of other small Caucasian symbols dot the field. The sky border is decorated in kufic script with a succession of delicately worked floral boxes. It is flanked by two counter-borders with multicolored "bayadères". External highlighting of old gold chess pieces and sky in positive/negative. Beautiful, sober presence. (Natural oxidation)
