Flanders tapestry panel, 16th century. - Lot 201
Flanders tapestry panel, 16th century. Dimensions : Height : 300cm ; Width : 255cm. Technical characteristics : Wool and silk. This scene features the famous "Ark of the Covenant", containing the "Tables of the Law". It stands on a richly draped altar in a palace room with multicolored paving. Before the eyes of a witness, two important biblical figures confront each other. The first, kneeling, seems to be dropping or stealing the Ark, while the second, standing behind him, slays the first with a sword through his breastplate into his back. Both are harnessed and helmeted in rich, floral armor. Through the openwork window, we see a fortified town under "somber hospices". Polychrome border decorated with bouquets of flowers and fruit. (Maintenance restorations and part of the borders later).
