The Thiers wall, named after the politician who conceived the project, was built between 1841 and 1844, at the request of King Louis-Philippe, who wished to build a bastioned wall around the capital that would make the city impregnable. Made up of ninety-four bastions, it encompassed not only Paris but also the surrounding communes: Montmartre, La Villette, Belleville, Charonne, Bercy, Auteuil, Passy, Grenelle, etc. All around this enclosure, sixteen detached forts were built, thirteen of which are shown on the map. The map also shows the railway lines from Paris, illustrated with locomotives. The city is divided into twelve districts. 85.5 x 112 cm on view Framed (missing a stick), wear and tear
