The Dream Machine was created by artist Brion Gysin and scientist Ian Sommerville under the influence of writer William S. Burroughs. Brion Gysin's 1958 experience led him to design the Dream Machine.
In its original form in 1960, the Dream machine consisted of a cylinder with slits along its sides. The cylinder is placed on a phonograph, which rotates at 78 or 45 rpm. A light bulb is suspended inside the cylinder, whose speed of rotation and number of slots ensure that the light emitted passes through the slots at a constant frequency of between 8 and 13 pulses per second. The Dream machine has undergone constant development ever since.
The photo-stimulation generated by the Dream Machine synchronizes the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems for deeper, more restorative sleep, and enables theta brainwaves to be reached, which expert meditators achieve with a great deal of practice.
Studies are beginning to show the benefits of photo-stimulation on symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Fewer thoughts and less pressure on your mind and body enable you to enter deep states of relaxation, releasing accumulated stress.
